Jennifer Lopez is among the list of celebrities under fire for attending Dolce & Gabbana’s opulent fashion show in Venice.
On Sunday, stars like Lopez, Jennifer Hudson, Helen Mirren, Christian Bale, Bebe Rexha and Kourtney Kardashian attended the Italian fashion brand’s Alta Moda show in St. Mark’s Square. The star-studded event has sparked outrage online, with many fans critiquing the A-list guest list for “shamelessly supporting” the brand’s co-founders Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, which have faced criticism for alleged racist, homophobic and fatphobic behaviour.
As photos from Dolce & Gabbana’s event began circulating online, fashion columnist, Evan Ross Katz, took to Instagram to share a “brief explainer” on the brand’s problematic past.
“D&G’s co-founders Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have sold ‘slave sandals,’ openly opposed gay adoption, and mocked folks boycotting their brand for dressing the Trumps,” the post reads. “Dolce has called babies born via in vitro fertilization ‘synthetic,” while Gabbana has claimed sexual harassment is ‘not violence,’ and called Selena Gomez ‘so ugly,’ Miley Cyrus ‘ignorant’ and critics of the brand’s ‘I’m thin and gorgeous’ sneakers ‘fat and full of cholesterol.'”
The post was met with praise for holding the brand accountable, and prompted many followers to tag celebrities, like Lopez, as well as celebrity stylists who attended the event.
“After seeing so many celebs with their Dolce & Gabbana posts over the weekend, it is quite refreshing to see someone speak the truth of the matter!” one follower wrote to Katz.
“I’ve noticed that they’ve been more visible than ever,” another follower wrote. “Jennifer Hudson has been wearing a lot of their clothes lately and so have Sharon Stone and Lupita Nyong’o. Angela Bassett [wore them] to the Golden Globes, Helen Mirren in Cannes, Megan Thee Stallion at the Grammys, Helena Bonham Carter at the BAFTAs and Halle Berry at the Oscars. They seem to have stylists in a chokehold – probably paying a lot of money. And it’s not as if they’re as good as they were in their heyday in the ‘90s and early ‘00s.”
“They are vile,” one Instagram user wrote. “And suddenly everyone forgets and jumps on a plane to Venice. It’s disgusting.”
“[It’s ]crazy how many people are there showing their support of this brand,” another said. “They still have not made public apologies.”
In 2018, the brand was in hot water yet again after releasing a series of controversial advertisements ahead of Dolce & Gabbana’s fashion show in Shanghai. One of the brand’s commercials featured a Chinese model struggling to eat pizza and cannolis using chopsticks which were deemed “racist” and “insensitive.”
Following the backlash, screenshots of messages allegedly sent by Gabbana were leaked online. In one message, Gabbana allegedly described China as “the country of” before adding a series of emojis to represent feces.
